B&N-dislclaimer

When I was in elementary school my parents grounded me from books. Other kids were grounded from playing with their friends or going outside. I was grounded from books.

funny party games for adults

I get it from my mom. And my dad, but mostly my mom because my dad is the king of educational and non-fiction books, and I’m the opposite. I love me some good fiction. I’d sit and read young adult lit all day if I didn’t have other responsibilities to take care of. And right now, I’m plowing through my spring reading list , one book at a time.

One of my favorite things about reading is sharing books with my mom. I read a book, I recommend it to my mom, and she reads it. I actually just bought her an e-reader for Christmas to make it even easier to read books I recommended or books I’d already bought.

My dad even asked me yesterday to stop recommending books to my mom because she’s apparently reading too much.

As if that was actually possible.

If you know someone who loves books, books make great gifts. And with Mother’s Day coming up in a few weeks, I’ve put together a list of fantastic books in all genres that would make perfect Mother’s Day gifts. I haven’t read all of them personally but for the ones that I haven’t read, I’ve included a synopsis so you can decide if it would be a good fit. The list is full of books that I personally would love to receive and/or ones that I would give to my own mom.

And if your mom has already read or already owns the book I recommended, I’ve included an alternative recommendation so you’re sure to find something!

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas: Books Moms Will Love

For the historical fiction lover – The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

This is the best book I’ve read in a while and actually one of the first books I recommended to my mom this year (and she loved it as well). It’s about two sisters living during World War II and their contributions to the war. It’s full of love, heartbreak, history, and wow moments. If your mom likes historical fiction, this is one of the best in recent years. And fun fact, the picture below is actually my cute mom holding up the book. She had to be in the post somewhere.

For the sentimental story lover – A Girl’s Guide to Moving on by Debbie Macomber

This one would make a perfect Mother’s Day gift because it’s all about the relationship between a daughter and her mother-in-law. Both make the decision to leave cheating spouses and build a relationship with one another as they are figuring out how to move on to the next stage in their lives. My mom is one of my best friends, so I could for sure understand how your mother would be the one to help you move on.

For the thinker – The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

When I was in college, this was one of the first books that one of my book-loving guy friends recommended to me. It’s still one of my favorite books to this day. It’s short, which makes it perfect for busy moms or moms who travel and don’t have a long time to sit down and read. It reminds me a little bit of The Little Prince in that it’s a fictional story written with the sole purpose of making you think and ponder. It’s a classic and a book that everyone, including your mom, is likely to love.

For the self-help lover – Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body by Kate Hudson

I love Kate Hudson, I mean she’s like one of those girls who I would just want as my best friend. And I love how clever the title of her new book Pretty Happy is. It’s not about how to look like her (but that would be gold), it’s about ways to get healthy and learning to love your body for what it is, even if it doesn’t look like Kate’s. If you’re looking for an inspiring book, this is it. It’s definitely on my Mother’s Day wish list.

I’ll admit, I haven’t actually read Celebrate but I have Lauren Conrad’s Style and absolutely love it. Not only are her books filled with large and gorgeous pictures, they have great tutorials and little tips I never would’ve thought of. And I’m a party girl, so that’s saying something. If you’re shopping for someone who likes to entertain, this is a great new book to take regular parties to smashing soirees. Or something like that. And if she doesn’t love what’s inside, the book itself is pretty enough to sit on a coffee table or shelf for others to look at when they visit.

For the organizer – Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

This is another book on my own Mother’s Day wish list rather than one for my mom. If you’ve read The Life-Changing Magic of Organizing and Tidying Up , you need this book to go along with it. It’s full of all of the “missing” details and illustrations that will help you finally get your house down to just things that spark joy rather than clutter everywhere. And if you haven’t read the first book, get them both together. They really are life-changing, even if they just help you get rid of a few bags of clothes and stuff from your house. This would also make a great gift for a mother or mother-in-law who you think has a problem with clutter, just maybe don’t mention that in your card.

For the healthy eater – The I Quit Sugar Cookbook: 306 Recipes for a Clean, Healthy Life by Sarah Wilson

With all of the crazy diets and clean eating lifestyles going on right now, this book fits right into the mix. Sarah Wilson quit eating sugar and after seeing the positive impact it had on her body, she wrote a book with recipes to help others achieve the same results she did. It’s full of pretty pictures, recipes that taste good (despite the no sugar), and easy to read.

For the foodie – Cravings : Recipes for All the Food You WANT to Eat by Chrissy Teigen

This is pretty much the opposite of the last book. This book is full of amazing recipes from Chrissy Teigen of all the things you actually want to eat, not just the things you should be eating. Think chocolate cake versus smoothie bowls in the cookbook above. There is a cookbook out there for everyone and if the woman you’re buying a book for is more into comfort, cravings, and chocolate – this is the book for her.

For the young at heart – The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

This book is perfect for moms who like moody young adult fiction. Think Fault in Our Stars , Paper Towns , All The Bright Places type writing where teens are trying to figure out how they fit into the world. If you’ve seen the movie , I’ve heard the book is way better and since I have yet to see a movie that’s better than the book, I’m sure it is. One tip, include a pack of tissues with the book.

For the creative – Portable Color Me Happy Coloring Kit

If your mom isn’t actually into reading but still loves taking a moment for herself to relax or make things, a portable coloring kit is the perfect gift idea! I chose the color me happy coloring kit because I like the name most, but Barnes & Noble sells all sorts of different coloring kits, coloring books, and even just colored pencils. They even have things as specific as a Harry Potter Magical Creatures coloring book !
